SmugMug > keywords > place > As a side experiment I tried running the original drum, with the donut removed, but hanging a 6 gram weight on the crutch pin. This provides added momentum which helps a dead beat mechanism run, but it also adds weight to the crutch pivots, which makes the mechanism run more poorly. In the past I have found that the weight has a beneficial impact on the mechanism running. In this case, the mechanism ran down to 10.75 pounds.

A previous repair person apparently could not get this mechanism to run with the original weight, so they added a "donut" around the original drum to increase the diameter of the winding drum. I initially restored the mechanism with the donut in place to see how much weight was required. It only took 9.4 pounds. I took the donut off, cleaned up the original drum, and found that it only took 10.75 pounds to drive it. Just think, a smaller drum still, that took advantage of the full 16 ounds available - this would bed a 2 year duration mechanism!
