As a side experiment I tried running the original drum, with the donut removed, but hanging a 6 gram weight on the crutch pin. This provides added momentum which helps a dead beat mechanism run, but it also adds weight to the crutch pivots, which makes the mechanism run more poorly. In the past I have found that the weight has a beneficial impact on the mechanism running. In this case, the mechanism ran down to 10.75 pounds.
